What does the "vitamins” word mean?

Vitamins are organic compounds that can be found in foods. Vitamins aid us in absorbing nutrients from the food we eat. Vitamins are not made by the body, so they must be obtained through food.

There are two types vitamins: water soluble or fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins dissolve easily in water. Examples include vitamin C,B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, biotin, pantothenic acid, and choline. The liver and fatty tissues are home to fat-soluble vitamins. You can find vitamin D, E K, A, beta carotene, and other fat-soluble vitamins.

Vitamins are classified according their biological activity. There are eight major categories of vitamins.

  • A – Essential for normal growth, and the maintenance of good health.
  • C - essential for nerve function and energy generation.
  • D - essential for healthy bones, teeth, and gums.
  • E - Required for good vision & reproduction
  • K - essential for healthy muscles, nerves, and bones.
  • P – vital for building strong bones.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA), for vitamins, varies depending upon age, gender, or physical condition. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sets the RDA values.

For adults 19 years and over, the RDA of vitamin A is 400mg per day. Pregnant women require 600 micrograms daily to support fetal development. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Infants under one year of age require 700 micrograms per day, but this amount decreases to 500 micrograms per day between 9 months and 12 months of age.

Children between the ages 1--18 years old who are overweight or obese require 800 micrograms per Day, while those who are overweight or obese need 1000 micrograms. To meet their nutritional needs, children underweight and obese require 1200 micrograms a day.

Children 4-8 years old who have anemia must consume 2200 micrograms of Vitamin C daily.

2000 micrograms per person is necessary for general health. Breastfeeding or pregnant women require 3000 micrograms per daily due to higher nutrient demands.

Adults over 70 need 1500 micrograms daily, as they lose 10% of their muscle every ten years.
